Senior Policy Analyst – Funding Policy
Fixed term through to June 2027 | Hybrid working An opportunity is available in Wellington for a Senior Policy Analyst to join a central government public sector funding policy team that provides policy advice to the Minister on funding settings.
This is a core policy role with a strong analytical focus, suited to an experienced policy professional who enjoys complex policy work, collaboration, and contributing to high quality Ministerial advice.
A major focus of the team currently is an operational grant review. This work involves reviewing the whole breadth of the operational grant and the formulas that sit underneath it. The Senior Policy Analyst will be expected to lead a defined piece of this work, working closely with others across the team.
Key responsibilities
- Deliver core policy analysis, including problem definition, options, risks and recommendations
- Write high quality advice, including Cabinet and Ministerial papers
- Lead parts of the operational grant review
- Work collaboratively with internal operational colleagues and other policy teams
- Engage with data, spreadsheets and Excel to inform policy analysis and advice
What we’re looking for
Essential experience and skills
- Proven experience in core policy roles within a government ministry or department
- Experience holding the pen on Cabinet papers and providing advice to Ministers
- Strong analytical and written communication skills
- A collaborative working style and confidence engaging across teams
- Comfort working with data and Excel spreadsheets (you do not need to be a technical modeller, but you must be comfortable doing deep dives into data)
This role is suitable for an established Senior Policy Analyst. Strong step up candidates with the right policy skills and experience will also be considered.

- Salary range $100,000 – $144,000, depending on experience
