Senior Policy Advisor

Are you an experienced policy professional ready to apply your expertise to work that matters? We are seeking a talented Senior Policy Advisor for a significant central government agency in Wellington. This is a fantastic opportunity to contribute to high-stakes policy development within a dynamic and supportive team. This is a 6-month fixed-term contract with an immediate start and the potential for extension.

This is more than just a policy role; it’s an opportunity to immerse yourself in critical work that has a real-world impact. You will be responsible for the end-to-end policy process, from initial analysis and research through to developing innovative options and advising on implementation strategies.
Your key contributions will involve:

  • Leading and contributing to the development of strategic policy advice on complex issues.
  • Preparing and presenting high-level documents, including cabinet papers and ministerial briefings.
  • Managing policy projects, ensuring deliverables are met on time and within scope.
  • Engaging and collaborating with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders to ensure policy is practical and effective.
This contract offers the chance to apply your skills to a significant work programme, providing valuable analysis that informs decision-making at the highest levels.

You are a seasoned and pragmatic policy advisor who thrives on complexity and challenge. You are comfortable navigating ambiguity and can confidently manage competing priorities. Your background has equipped you with a strong understanding of the machinery of government and parliamentary processes. You possess exceptional communication skills, enabling you to build rapport with stakeholders and present your advice clearly and persuasively. You are a self-starter, ready to hit the ground running and make an immediate contribution.

To be successful in this role, you will bring:
  • Demonstrated experience in a policy development role within the New Zealand public sector.
  • A proven ability to analyse complex issues, develop evidence-based options, and provide robust policy recommendations.
  • Experience in preparing and contributing to cabinet papers, ministerial correspondence, and select committee reports.
  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to manage projects from conception to completion.
  • Excellent relationship management skills, with a track record of effective consultation and collaboration.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex ideas with clarity and precision.
