How Should I Prepare For My Interview?

Almee Bulton • April 24, 2019

1 - Research

Prior to the interview, it’s important to do your research on the organisation and the hiring manager with whom you will be meeting. This includes reviewing their company website, knowing its size, when they opened, as well as looking at any recent posts they have made on social media. Review the company’s values, mission statement and how it is represented.

2 - Understand the job description

Make sure you have a full understanding of the position for which you are applying. This includes what the responsibilities will include, as well as the position you will be reporting to if the information is provided. This will give you a better understanding of how the questions will be focused and will allow you to prepare some of your answers in advance.

3 - Prepare (some) your answers

Have some examples and scenarios prepared and ready to go for your interview. As you have already reviewed the position description, think of examples which align with the responsibilities they are looking for. For example, if the position requires you to work closely within a team, think of examples where you’ve previously worked in a team and how your teamwork contributed towards a particular outcome. Think of what will make you stand out from the other applicants being interviewed. Be specific with your answers; make them memorable.

4 - Dress for the role

First impressions are everything. This means it’s extremely important to think about what you will wear for the interview. If you have previously met with someone who works within the organisation, take note of what they are wearing. If the position is within a corporate organisation, it’s important to wear a matching suit, enclosed shoes and ensure your hair is neat and tidy. This applies to both men and women.

Preparation really is key when it comes to getting interview ready. An interviewer will always be able to tell the difference between a well-prepared job seeker and one who has just stepped into the interview.
