How to Survive Your First Week

The first week in a new job can be tough. You might be feeling nervous, anxious, excited and even overwhelmed with all of the new information to learn! Never fear, because I’ve got my top five tips on how to survive your first week at the office.

1. Don’t be late – leave early

First impressions matter. It’s plain and simple. You don’t want to be the person who arrives late on their first day! Make sure you leave extra early for your very first day, and plan ahead for delays. If you have to, do a trial run of your commute the week before to find out what will work best for you.

2. Head into the office with an open mind

Expectations can really affect how your day will pan out. Our mind is a powerful tool and we really can manifest what we think. Don’t go in being a ‘negative nancy’ thinking that you won’t be any good at the job –if you tell yourself that, it will be the case! Be open to new experiences and meeting new people. Being positive is the key, but on the other hand, don’t expect things to go perfectly all day long because the fact is, life is full of hurdles and bumps in the road and we’re bound to encounter them regularly.

3. Get to know your colleagues

Spend some time with your colleagues and get to know them. After all, you’ll be spending the majority of your week with them! Learn what their interests are, their backgrounds and just get to know them as a person. Who knows, you might find out you have loads in common!

4. Be confident , not cocky

Confidence is an admirable quality and is undeniably positive in any career field. However, you don’t want to be the ‘know-it-all’ who is overly cocky and thinks they can do it all. Initiative is a fantastic tool, but so is the ability to listen and work with others! Take your time to learn things – properly.

5. Make sure you buy the right wine !!

If you’re working at people2people, you’ll know that we love to wind down after work on a Friday afternoon with a beer or a glass of wine. If you’re new to the business, like me, you’ll also quickly learn that everybody has their favourites – so make sure you ask around and find out which one to buy (and don’t forget to put the beers in the ‘fridge!).
